Father and young daughter among latest road accident fatalities

A day of celebration turned into a night of mourning for a Berbice family as a father and his daughter were among four persons killed in a smash-up between two vehicles at Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara on Saturday night.

Tragedy struck as Guyoil employee Jason Rudder and his 11-year-old daughter Jamela Rudder were heading back home after the daughter received special awards for her outstanding common entrance performance from her father’s workplace. The two were among four passengers in a car that was being driven by 33-year-old Kellon Jones, who also died in the accident.

The other car that was involved in the accident was being driven by 26-year-old East Coast Demerara resident Chris Gonsalves, who was the fourth person that died in the smash-up.

In a statement, the Police said the car with the young girl and her father was proceeding east along the northern side of the De Hoop Public Road when the other car which was traveling in the opposite direction, overtook another vehicle at a fast rate and ended up directly in the path of the car with the young girl and her dad.

Both drivers along with the injured passengers were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital where doctors pronounced the two drivers and the father and daughter dead.

Two other persons were injured in the accident. One was treated and released while the other was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.

The Police said the matter remains under investigation.

The country has now recorded more than 145 road deaths over the past nine months.

In a statement last evening, the Guyana Oil Company expressed its shock over the tragedy, remembering its employee and his daughter, who earlier on Saturday attended the company’s award ceremony where the 11-year-old was celebrated for her performance at the common entrance exams.
