GRA flags increased attempts to smuggle guns and drugs from the US to Guyana

The Guyana Revenue Authority, (GRA) today said that there appears to be an increase in smuggling of narcotics and other prohibited items in barrels, boxes and other personal consignments at the various ports of entry in Guyana.

The Authority’s statement comes on the heels of the seizure of several prohibited items at the various ports of entry across the country.

“The Authority continues to observe an alarming trend in the efforts to smuggle refined narcotic drugs and other illicit items through personal consignments (barrels, boxes, packages, suitcases and containers) at ports of entry into Guyana. The Authority again reiterates that all such persons dealing in or contemplating engaging in such illegal activities to cease and desist therefrom, or they shall be dealt with in accordance with the law,” GRA said in a statement today.

The GRA said last week, its Customs Officers seized a quantity of weapons and items suspected to be narcotics found in a barrel that was imported from the USA.

The items were seized by GRA, and the shipping agent, who was present at the time of the inspection, was taken into custody and handed over to CANU and the Guyana Police Force for further investigations.

The Revenue Authority said its officers will continue to work to ensure that illegal items that find their way into the country, or are leaving the country, are intercepted and those responsible be dealt with.

The agency is also urging persons to report suspected smuggling activities.
