The Guyana Revenue Authority’s Enforcement Unit has carried out another operation that has resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of uncustomed goods.
In a statement, the GRA said three motor vehicles laden with a large quantity of uncustomed chicken was busted at Cane Grove, Mahaica and at a separate location, the GRA said its Officers also seized a large quantity of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.
Four persons have so far been arrested and are assisting with investigations the Revenue agency said.
“The Authority continues with its’ “zero tolerance” approach against smuggling and other illegal activities; thereby allowing for a ‘level playing field’ for legitimate businesses and the collection of revenue,” the authority said.
GRA reminded that the importation of foreign chicken is restricted and its consumption without proper clearance and certification from the Ministry of Health could pose serious health risks.
“Once again, the Authority encourages persons involved in such activities to cease and desist therefrom, and bring themselves into compliance with the nation’s Tax, Trade and Border laws,” GRA said.
In the past months, the GRA has seized millions of dollars in alcohol, chicken and other items from business persons who found creative ways to evade paying taxes.
The GRA has warned that it will continue to go after persons who smuggle items into the country rather than going through the proper channel.
