Eight men from the Berbice area were arrested for smuggling during two operations by the enforcement unit of the Guyana Revenue Authority with support from the Coast Guard and the Police.
The first bust took place on Wednesday in the Abary area.
In a statement, the Guyana Revenue Authority indicated that during the operation, its agents seized one motor vessel which was laden with a large quantity of foreign liquor and other uncustomed items at the Abary foreshore.
The vessel which is unlicensed was being operated by three individuals who were arrested after they attempted to evade the Law Enforcement Authorities, the statement said.
In a separate operation on the same day, the GRA Enforcement arm with the support of the Guyana Police Force, seized another motor vessel and a mini bus laden with a large quantity of foreign alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and other uncustomed items, at the Number 43 Village koker, Corentyne, Berbice.
Five persons were arrested in connection with that bust.
According to the Revenue Authority, as it maintains a “zero tolerance” approach against smuggling and other illegal activities, it is encouraging persons involved in such activities to cease and desist and get themselves into compliance with the nation’s Tax, Trade and Border laws.
Those arrested are to face the Courts soon.
