Judicial Service Commission confirms appointment of Magistrate Judy Latchman as new Chief Magistrate

The Judicial Service Commission has announced the appointment of Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman as the new Chief Magistrate of Guyana.

In a statement last evening, the Judicial Service Commission indicated that Magistrate Latchman’s appointment was made by the Commission on the 7th January 2025 and will therefore take effect from that date.

Another Principal Magistrate, Faith McGusty, has been Acting as the Chief Magistrate since the retirement of the former Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in 2023.

The new Chief Magistrate, Judy Latchman, has been serving as a Magistrate since 2009. In 2017, she was promoted to the post of Principal Magistrate.

Magistrate Latchman obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Guyana in 2002 and a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2004. She was admitted to the Bar of Guyana in October 2004.

The Judicial Service Commission said her professional journey began as a State Counsel in the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 2004, and she was later promoted to serve as a Senior State Counsel in those Chambers in 2008, before eventually moving on to the Magistracy in 2009.

Chief Magistrate Latchman is also a fellow of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute and a member of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association as well as the Judicial Education Institute of Guyana.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Commission also announced the appointment of six new Magistrates. Those selected to serve as new Magistrates are State Counsel, Ocelisa Marks, Director of Legal Services at GO-Invest, Nikkisha Logan, Legal Assistant to the Chancellor, Jinelle Joseph, Legal Adviser at the Environmental Protection Agency, Shareefah Parks, Prosecutor, Taneisha Saygon and State Counsel in the Office of the DPP, Caressa Henry.
