
The Corentyne, Berbice taxi driver who was nabbed last Wednesday with 257 pounds of marijuana in the trunk and backseat of his car has been sentenced to three years and eight months in jail, and fined $104. 9 million after pleading guilty to drug trafficking.
32-year-old, Naasik Alli, appeared at the Albion Magistrates’ Court on Friday where the charge of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking was read to him.
After Magistrate Tuanna Hardy read the charge to him, the man did not waste the Court’s time and pleaded guilty. The Magistrate then handed down the prison sentence and fine.
The Police in a statement explained that Naasik Alli was nabbed during a Police intelligence-led operation on Wednesday in Berbice. His vehicle was intercepted and the lawmen discovered the large quantity of marijuana stacked up in the trunk and the back seat of the car.
The Police said the seized marijuana carries a street value of $35 million.
