Myers in custody for “conspiracy to defraud” and not obstruction of justice -says Police

The Guyana Police Force in a statement this morning denied that the Deputy Chief Election Officer Roxanne Myers is in Police custody for obstruction of justice because she opted to remain silent to questions about election fraud allegations.

The Force has now explained that she is in custody for conspiracy to defraud.

Myers turned up at the CID Headquarters yesterday morning in the company of Attorney Nigel Hughes who said the only charge put to her was obstruction of justice.

The Police said it was about to issue a wanted bulletin for her arrest but she turned up at the CID headquarters.

The Force claims that it spent more than a month making efforts to contact the Deputy Chief Election officer to face questions about post-election incidents.

“Those efforts were futile, as Ms. Myers made every effort to elude the Police investigators. As a consequence, a Wanted Bulletin for Ms. Myers was prepared by the GPF but before it was issued she turned up at CID Headquarters in the company of her Attorneys on October 6, 2020, where she surrendered to the Police”, the Police statement said.

The Police Force said it rejects the statements by the Attorney for the Deputy CEO regarding the reason for her arrest.

Attorney Nigel Hughes told reporters yesterday that the issue of conspiracy to defraud was never put to his client and she was only taken into custody after she exercised her right to remain silent.

Myers was locked up last evening at the Beterverwaghting Police station after station bail was refused. There is concern about her health after it was revealed that she is a diabetic who is on insulin and needs to take additional precautions because of Coronavirus.
