The Opposition today vowed to continue to press on with its calls for there to be a full and proper investigation of the rape allegations that were leveled against former Local Government Minister, Nigel Dharamlall by a school girl.
Following the resignation of Dharamall, the young lady who accused him of rape released a statement claiming that she expected the issue to go away with his resignation.
But for the Opposition, the young lady’s recent may have been coerced.
Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton and Member of Parliament Coretta McDonald said based on the series of events which took place after the original rape complaint was filed, a full and thorough investigation is still needed.
“It is evident here, that it was the power of the purse that was used to get the young lady to retract what she was saying and you can put yourself in the place of a child in which the police coming at you, the bribers coming at you, the political operatives coming at you, they would have worn her down. She must have arrived at the point where it was too much for her,” Mr. Norton said.
He said the offence is one that has no statute bar, and therefore it has to be pursued.
For her part, Opposition Member of Parliament Corretta Mc Donald said the child was not properly protected by the state after she made known her allegations.
“What this here has done, is to set a dangerous precedence for many more young Amerindian girls and other girls because it has come to a point now where people are going to be skeptical to help if there is a real situation. But like we said, we are not going to allow this matter to rest,” Mc Donald noted.
Dharamlall has been keeping a low profile since his resignation.
