Police Sergeant shot dead in suspected “friendly fire”

Police investigators have rushed in to the interior location of Karrau in Region 7 to probe the shooting death of Police Sergeant Alex Vaughn.

Vaughn was part of a Police search party on the hunt for prison escapee and double murder suspect, Akeem Wong.

While reports of the shooting death of the Police Sergeant are sketchy, the Guyana Police Force has confirmed that the Police Sergeant was mistakenly shot dead by a Police Constable, who has since been placed under close arrest.

In a short statement on the incident, the Police Force said based on preliminary information, the Police Constable unintentionally fatally wounded Sergeant Alex Vaughn on Tuesday.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken, has since ordered a probe which is currently ongoing by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and supervised by the Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority.

This morning, a team from the top brass of the Police Force visited the Tuschen home of the dead Police officer where they offered condolences to family members. Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus led the Police team to meet with the family members.

Investigations into the fatal incident are ongoing.
