Six children rescued from sinking canoe in Cuyuni River

Six Children were rescued from the Cuyuni River on Tuesday afternoon after their Canoe sank while they were on their way home.

A release from the Guyana Police Force said the Canoe started to sink while traversing the Cuyuni River in the vicinity of Eteringbang Landing at about 4:45pm yesterday with the six students of Eteringbang Primary School inside.

The Children, who are Venezuelan nationals, were heading home when they noticed the canoe taking in water.

Public-spirited persons rushed to their assistance and were able to rescue all of the children who were later seen and examined by a doctor at the Eteringbang Health Center in the presence of their parents.

There were no serious injuries.

The names of the six children who survived the ordeal are: Keysha Sanchez, Keitly Sanchez, Elizabeth Camping, Enio Random, Eliana Random and Ashili Random. The students are all from San Martin in Venezuela and attend school in the neighbouring village of Eterinbang in Guyana.
