Elections Observers expected in Guyana early

The Guyana Government is anticipating a heavy presence of international observer missions for the May 11 Regional and General elections with letters of invitation already dispatched to the governments of Indian and South Africa and several other international bodies that have participated in past elections.

Government’s Chief Spokesman Dr. Roger Luncheon told the media on Wednesday that the administration is interested in having those international observer missions present in Guyana as early as Nomination Day on April 7.

Luncheon, who was at the time speaking at his weekly post Cabinet media briefing, said the prospects of all invited parties being present seems promising.

The time frame between which the missions will arrive to when they depart will not be imposed by the administration, Luncheon assured, but will be done at the discretion of the parties.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government has nonetheless made its interest of having those missions in Guyana early and ensuring they remain for an extended period after the elections known.

Among the international bodies invited are the United Nations, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Commonwealth, UNASUR and the Carter Center.

Already two teams from the UN and the Carter Center have completed needs assessment in Guyana for which the reports are expected to be released shortly which the administration eagerly awaits.

The Presidential invitations to the international community were sent subsequent the dissolution of Parliament on February 28 and followed letters of notification which was dispatched early in January.

Already the United States Embassy has indicated its intention to support the OAS mission in Guyana along with other local groups.

Luncheon made no mention of the local groups that are to be accredited to officially observe the 2015 elections.
