Former Deputy Chief Elections Officer awarded $2M in damages for wrongful arrest

Former Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Roxanne Myers has been awarded $2 Million by the High Court in compensatory damages for wrongful arrest and detention. She filed the matter more than three years ago.

Myers was arrested on October 6, 2020, after she turned herself in at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in the company of her Attorneys, Mr. Nigel Hughes and Mr. Ronald Daniels.

She was immediately arrested for “perverting the course of justice” when she exercised her right to remain silent when questioned about matters related to the General and Regional Elections 2020.

She was detained from 6th to 9th October 2020 at the Beterverwagting Police Station.

In awarding the compensatory damages, High Court Judge, Simone Morris-Ramlall, ruled that the Court did not find that her detention amounted to inhumane treatment. No exemplary damages were awarded.

Myers is currently before the Magistrate Court along with eight others facing conspiracy charges in relation to electoral fraud allegations. She has repeatedly maintained her innocence along with the other defendants in that matter.
