The 14-year-old neighbour of the Mahaicony shopkeeper who was found tied up and beaten to death, and a 24-year-old man from the same area, were today charged with the woman’s murder.
The woman’s lifeless body was found last Monday (October 17, 2016) in her house.
The two were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of murder. The 24-year-old has been identified as Davanad Rampersaud. The name and identity of the 14-year-old have been withheld since he is a juvenile.
During the hearing in the packed courtroom, the two appeared distraught and the teenager appeared to be crying as he was led out of the courtroom in shackles.
Family members of the two men as well as of the dead woman were all in court when the charges were read to the two defendants.
The matter has been transferred to the Mahaicony Magistrates’ Court for another hearing on November 14, 2016.
56-year-old shopkeeper, Bibi Shakeela Ali was found on the floor of her house with her hands and feet tied and several marks of violence about her body.
She operated a small shop just under her house. Neighbours became concerned about the woman last Monday after noticing that the shop remained closed. She usually opened her shop very early in the mornings, according to a neighbour.
