An 18-year-old man is nursing a gunshot wound and is under police guard at the Georgetown Hospital after he was shot late on Monday night by an off duty policeman.
The teenager, whose name has not been released, had reportedly just robbed a West Ruimveldt resident of cell phones when he was confronted by the off-duty policeman.
According to a statement from the Police Force, the man opened fire on the Policeman as he was being approached and the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect.
He was arrested and found in possession of a .32 revolver with two live rounds. Four spent shells were also discovered at the scene. The stolen cellphones were also recovered.
The 18-year-old’s accomplice in the robbery made good his escape while he was facing off with the armed policeman.
He will face robbery and other charges when he is discharged from the hospital.
