Police in the East Canje area in Berbice, have launched an investigation into the murder of a cattle farmer in the community.
Dead is 38-year-old Ramnarine Itwaru of Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, Berbice.
The man’s lifeless body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon by a fisherman, hours after he had left his home to tend to his cattle and cut grass for the cattle.
His wife screamed out for justice as she got news of his murder. “I want justice. I need justice”, the woman screamed as she banged against the floor as other relatives attempted to console her.
The farmer’s bullet riddled body was found on a dam in the same East Canje area. Persons in the area told investigators that they heard a number of gunshots just before 2:30pm on Tuesday, around the same time that the farmer would have been in the area.
Family members suspect that the man may have been murdered over a piece of land that he got from another relative and recently spent money developing. Some villagers reportedly became incensed after he developed the land for his cattle farm and prevented other persons from using the farmlands for their own use.
Investigators have also been told that recently someone stole a number of the man’s cows and they suspect that there may have been a connection there also.
The father of one was well respected in his community and relatives said he mostly kept to himself and family. They remain shocked over the murder. Investigations are ongoing.
