24 years in jail for West Demerara man who admitted to shooting wife to death and burying her body

Six years after he brutally murdered his ex-wife, Zaila Sugrim by shooting her to the head, burned her body and later buried her remains in a shallow grave, former gas station owner, Ryan Sugrim was today sentenced to 24 years in jail.

When Sugrim’s High Court trial began in February for the 2019 murder on the West Coast of Demerara, he opted to enter a guilty plea to the murder charge.

The 24 year jail sentence was handed down this morning by Justice Damone Younge at the High Court.

The mother of five had ended her relationship with the husband and moved out of their home months before the murder. She was last seen alive leaving her home in the company of the husband to visit one of her sons who lived with him at his West Demerara home.

She never made it to visit her son, and the Police reported that she was murdered between the 11th and 14th of May, 2019.

At the time, family members told the media that they were forced to file a missing person’s report after the woman did not return to her home from the trip to her son.

She had ended her relationship with the man after years of abuse.

The husband had initially claimed he was unaware of her whereabouts, but her burnt remains were later discovered buried in a garden at the gas station that he owned.
