28-year-old on $700,000 bail for dangerous driving death of DDL Plant Manager

A 28-year-old labourer from Diamond Housing Scheme on the East Bank of Demerara was today charged with causing the death of Chemist and Distillery Plant Manager, Jason Bhojedat by dangerous driving.

The accused, Shawn Sargeant, appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court this morning where the charge was read to him and he was not required to enter a plea to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He was granted bail in the sum of $700,000.

The fatal accident took place on Sunday night along the Diamond Interlink Road close to the village of Farm.

33-year-old Jason Bhojedat was driving a small mini-bus when the car being driven by Sargeant slammed into the bus from the back. The impact of the hit flipped the bus over several times, with it coming to a stop after hitting a utility pole.

The Police has stated that while it was able to arrest the accused, it was unable to administer a breathalyzer test to ascertain his blood alcohol level, because he had several injuries to his mouth and those injuries reportedly carried stitches.

The matter remains under active investigation. The accused is expected back in Court in late February.
