The sod has been turned for the construction of a $4.4 Billion hospital in Moruca, Region One. The Government has described the project as a transformative one that will significantly improve access to quality healthcare services in the Barima-Waini Region.
At the sod-turning ceremony on Tuesday, President Irfaan Ali said the hospital’s construction will turn a new page for Moruca and Region One.
“We gather not to turn sod but to turn a new page of Moruca, a page that tells the story of transformation, empowerment and partnership,” President Ali said.
The hospital will be constructed by PCI Sinopharm International Consortium (China), and is expected to be completed within 24 months.
It will have 45 inpatient beds and 20 general beds, a fully functional operating theatre, a modern emergency room, a pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), an intensive care unit (ICU) and a maternity Unit.
It will also offer a range of diagnostic imaging and other services.
The hospital is intended to benefit over 30,000 persons living in Region One and parts of Region Two.
Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony said the new hospital will complement the smart hospital at Mabaruma. He said investments will continue in the health sector.
“So, one of the first things that the government did was to allocate in 2022 $100M to this region, in addition to your regional budget. A $100M so that we can fix up the Health Sector. Then last year, the government allocated $200M in addition to your regional budget so that we can fix up health facilities, and then this year, we allocated $500M so that we can add and fix facilities in your region. Today, we have 56 health facilities in your region. And so, for your community, the communities across Region One, where you have 82 communities, we now have health facilities in 56 of them, and by the end of this year, which is not so long from now, we intend to make sure that another six facilities would be operational so that you can have more access to healthcare services,” the Health Minister explained.
The Government is looking to add another 12 health facilities to the region next year, and will complement the 13 telemedicine centres currently available in the region.
