40 year-olds and above to begin receiving COVID vaccines from next week

In an address to the nation this evening, President Irfaan Ali announced that the Government will be rolling out a massive effort to get more persons vaccinated against the Coronavirus.

Guyana has so far seen the vaccination of 25,000 persons.  From next week, the Health Ministry will begin the vaccination of persons from 40 years and above, the President said.

“Early in the new week, the vaccination programme will be expanded to all persons 40 years and older. To aggressively expand the programme, the Government of Guyana has procured 200,000 doses of vaccines and is exploring the further procurement of another 200,000 doses aimed at achieving herd immunity in the fastest possible timeframe.

He announced that the Guyana Defence Force’s Medical Brigade and Medical students and nursing students will assist with the vaccination initiative.

And with two sets of holidays coming up next week, the President is pleading with citizens not to let their guards down. He said there will be strict enforcement of the COVID-19 regulations

President Ali said his government is continuing its efforts to procure COVID-19 vaccines from additional sources.  The country was promised 100,000 vaccines through the COVAX initiative, but COVAX has sinced reduced that number to 24,000.
