At the High Court today, a 12-member jury returned a guilty verdict against Omardat Persaud who was charged with two counts of having sexual activity with a child family member. The child was 5-years-old at the time of the incident.
That verdict caught the man’s Attorney Darren Wade by surprise resulting in an outburst in the Court. Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall was forced to warn the Attorney about his behaviour after he blurted out that the jury had made the wrong decision.
Justice Ramlall moved ahead with the sentencing phase and slapped the man with a 45-year jail sentence, telling him that he will only become eligible for parole after serving 35 years.
The Judge said she based her sentencing on the seriousness of the offense and his lack of remorse.
The man left the Courtroom showing little emotion as he was led away by the Police.
The sexual assault of the young child by Persaud took place back in 2015. His case is one of the first ones that made the court roster in the current session.
