58-year-old man sentenced to 3 years in jail over 2016 deadly road accident

A 58-year-old West Ruimveldt man will be spending the next three years in jail, after he being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

The man, Andrew Alder, appeared before the Chief Magistrate this morning with a pair of crutches to keep his balance.

The magistrate told him that the case had been made out against him and she has made a decision to sentence him to three years in prison for causing the death of Denesh Bissoon.

Alder showed no emotion after the sentence was handed down and quietly left the courtroom in the custody of the Police.

It was on March 6, 2016 that Alder, who worked for Guyoil, was on his way to the airport to pick up his relatives when he slammed into a motorcycle that Bissoon was riding.

The man had claimed that  it was Bissoon who rode into his vehicle in the Houston areas on the East Bank Demerara. However, the Police said he was driving in a manner that was dangerous to the public and that caused the accident.

His Attorney did not say whether any moves would be made to appeal the verdict and sentencing.
