Sanjay’s owner jailed for deadly road accident

Georgetown businessman and drag racer, Sanjay Persaud was sentenced to 58 months in jail today by Magistrate Judy Latchman after he was found guilty of causing the death of city council worker, Leon Hunte by dangerous driving.

Persaud was represented by Attorney Glen Hannoman who failed in his bid to secure bail for the businessman after indicating to the court that he intended to appeal the guilt verdict and sentence.

The magistrate refused bail and that now forces the attorney to file high court proceedings. In the meantime, the Sanjay’s Jewellery Store owner is expected to be transferred to the Camp Street jail this evening to begin his sentence.

The Prosecution team in its winning argument pointed out to the court that the businessman flouted the rules of the road and broke a number of laws when he slammed into the city council worker who was riding home at the time.

The accident occurred on the night of September 14, 2014 on Lamaha Street.
