An additional 800 Police Officers are expected to be promoted within the Guyana Police Force in the coming days, as a follow up to the large scale promotion of the men and women in uniform.
According to the Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, in total 2,800 ranks are expected to be promoted.
“I was told that 2,800 Police would receive promotion, and already about 2,000 of those have been notified. Another 800 would receive their notifications soon,” the Vice President disclosed during his weekly press conference at Freedom House on Thursday.
In arriving at the number to be promoted, he said consideration was given to the ranks who have served the country with “distinction” and without “blemish,” but may have been overlooked during the course of their profession for one reason or another.
He said a number of Police have contacted the Government, indicating that they too have been overlooked.
“They may be part of the 800 but I want to assure that all of the police, who have contacted the president… – they approach you wherever you go – that everyone who is eligible will receive the promotion, everyone who is eligible. And there shall be a review process for those who feel aggrieved that they have been overlooked or bypassed, that their case will be examined and once confirmed, they too will receive their promotion,” the Vice President assured.
In making the initial announcement last week, President Irfaan Ali explained that many long serving members of the Police Force have retired at the level of Constable and Corporal after serving for more than 20 years. He said that will no longer take place.
The large-scale promotion is taking place at a time when the country is heading to General and Regional Elections.
