President announces scale adjustments and promotions for some categories of Police Ranks

In an election campaign style speech to a large audience of Police ranks this morning at Police headquarters, Eve Leary, President Irfaan Ali implored on serving members of the Force to take advantage of the various programmes and measures introduced by his Government, while announcing salary adjustments and promotions for some Police ranks.

“Between 8 to 10 years of service and you’re a Corporal now, we are going to put all of them to the highest level of the (salary) scale as Corporal. So their salary will be adjusted to the highest level of the scale. All those persons who are Constables and have between 5 and 7 years of service and have not been promoted, you will now go to Lance Corporal at the highest level of the scale. And that brings us now to those who are 8 to 10 years in the system, and you’re still a Constable, you go straight to Corporal now at the highest end of the scale. Those with 10 to 13 years of service, we are going to put you guys as Sergeant…those between 13 and 15, you will go to Sergeant at the highest level of the scale. Those who are in the Force now with 20 years and above service with good discipline record and are not at the level of Inspector, will be adjusted to the level of Inspector”, the President announced to loud applause.

He said the Guyana Police Force has seen too many long serving members retiring at the level of Constable and Corporal after serving for more than 20 years. He said that changes as every member of the Force with 20 years of service and no discipline record will be moved to the level of Inspector.

The President told the Police Officers that he wants them to work together and work with the Government to improve the security situation in the country. He pointed them to various investments that have been made by his Government over the past five years to improve their working conditions.

“We have to take collective responsibility, we are investing in these new stations, we are investing in new facilities and the adjustments that we are making, I want us to ensure that the population respects us and we are going to continue to improve our infrastructure”, Ali assured.

Confident of winning the upcoming elections, the President told the Police ranks that he wants to work with them to further improve the Police Force.

“I want us to work together over the next five years…and I want to leave the best possible Police Force with the best standards for all of you but you have to work with me. This is a collective effort”, he noted.

The President told the Police Officers that once they continue to serve the Force with dignity and honour, they can be assured of being rewarded.

He said Police Officers must hold themselves up to a higher standard and not bow to corruption.
President Ali instructed the Police Commissioner to ensure every Police vehicle is now equipped with a cooler of water and juice, so ranks will no longer have to seek the public’s help when they are on patrol.

Members of the Disciplined Services will cast their ballots on the 22nd August.
