Salary adjustments announced for some categories of teachers

The Ministry of Education has announced salary adjustments for certain categories of teachers.

The eligible teachers will receive a lump-sum payment for the period September 1, 2020 to September 30 2023 in October, and moving forward, the adjustments will be reflected in their monthly salaries.

In a circular issued today, Finance Secretary, Sukrishalall Pasha, said that the Government has approved the adjustments for teachers who are being paid below the minimum applicable scale, to be brought up to the minimum of the scale of the current year.

The adjustments, according to the Finance Secretary, will take effect from October 1, 2023.

The move will pave the way for teachers to now be paid based on merit and years of service.

As of 2016, teachers entering the system, were paid similar salaries to those who were in the system for longer years with the same qualification of the new entrants. The issue has been a headache for teachers who have been calling on the Education Ministry to resolve their issue.

“One of arrears payment will be made for eligible teachers for the period September 1, 2020 to September 30, 2023,” the circular noted.

It is not clear if the Guyana Teachers Union was consulted on the adjustments, since it is one of the issues the union has continuously raised.

On Monday, Education Ministry Priya Manickchand declared that the Government will be engaging stakeholders in the Education sector directly, with the Office of the President leading the consultations for salary increases and benefits.

The Guyana Teachers’ Union has since accused the Government of trying to sideline the union.
