Active COVID Cases and Hospitalisations continue to decline -Health Minister

Although new infections are being recorded daily at a rate of over 50 per day, Guyana continues to record a reduction in the overall number of positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the country and the vaccination campaign is being credited for the sharp decline.

Last week the Minister of Health announced that Region Three has the highest number of active cases in the country with over 1000 active cases. That number has dropped by more than three hundred cases while the Region Four active cases have been reduced by more than 200. Still, there are over 2000 active cases in the country and the Ministry of Health is hoping that the number of active cases could be further reduced.

“Currently, the active cases that we have is 2,112, we are seeing about 820 cases in Region Three. Region Four is now at 764 cases, Region Six about 232 cases, and Region Ten with 93 cases. So these are the areas where we are seeing the most cases, Region Two also, they have about 81 cases,” the Health Minister said.

There are now 55 persons hospitalized with COVID, with 38 of those persons at the Ocean View facility.

The Minister also explained that in some situations, the Health Ministry is addressing the question of contact tracing to further get a grip of the virus although the exercise has proven to be difficult.

“When you have large numbers it becomes quite challenging because we have to do this mechanically. So if you have say 2,000 active cases, to each of those cases sometimes you have to do contact tracing for maybe 5-10 persons and that can become challenging, very quickly,” the Health Minister explained.

The country’s Covid-19 vaccination rate has also been progressing with Region Four leading the charge.

With more than 50 percent of the country’s adult population now fully vaccinated the Health Ministry is pushing for that 80% mark to meet herd immunity.

There are over 100,000 citizens who are still to return for the second dose of their COVID-19 vaccine and the Minister continues to urge those persons to get the jab as soon as possible.
