AFC roasts Government over bulldozing of vendors and arrest of Mayor and MP

The Alliance For Change today lambasted the Government and the Guyana Police Force over the treatment of the New Market Street vendors and the subsequent arrest of the City Mayor Ubraj Narine and Opposition MP Sherod Duncan.

The Mayor is facing charges over his questioning of whether the President was turning Guyana into a muslim state by his repeated refusal to engage the municipality. MP Duncan, who is also the AFC’s General Secretary, is facing cyber crime charges for airing the Mayor’s statement at the protest via social media.

Today, the AFC said the words uttered by the Mayor can never be described as words to excite hostility as intended by Parliament.

The party said the government’s actions to bulldoze the caravans belonging to the vendors and the filing of charges against Narine and Duncan more represent actions to excite hostility.

“The Mayor’s rhetorical questions and comments as to why the President does not want to work with him, and why some are bulldozed while others are appeased and placated, is fundamentally what must be stated in a democracy by public officials. Further, a reporter’s right to video a Mayor uttering those words for purposes of disseminating them on his FB page can never be an offence”, the AFC said.

The AFC has denounced as reprehensible, the two developments involving the government, describing them as wounds to democratic governance.

The Alliance For Change said the PPP Government is degrading democracy, dismantling governing arrangements, including free and fair elections, and are now justifying it in the name of democracy and the rule of law.
