Guyana’s Attorney General, Senior Counsel Anil Nandlall has slammed attacks against President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, Justice Winston Anderson.

Appearing on his weekly television programme on Tuesday evening, the Attorney General took aim at a social media post by Region 10 Councillor and WIN party member, Mark Goring.

Mr. Nandlall described the post by the Regional Councilor as grossly disrespectful towards Guyana’s highest Judicial Officer.

“This is a grossly disrespectful and scurrilous attack upon the President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the highest-ranking judicial officer of the Judiciary of Guyana and it constitutes a scathing attack, not only on the Caribbean Court of Justice but the administration of justice in Guyana. I condemn this contemptuous publication in the strongest possible term and I invite every right-thinking member of society to do the same,” Mr. Nandlall urged.

Mr. Nandlall said such an attack demands an apology and retraction, but noted that he will not seek an apology since he is sure none will be forthcoming.

The CCJ President has been coming in for criticism following an explosive revelation over the weekend in the Trinidad Express that some Judges of the Court have accused the President of the Court of being “dictatorial” and “authoritarian”.

“But importantly, whatever is unfolding publicly it is a fundamental importance that I remind that the Caribbean Court of Justice is Guyana’s final Court, and it stands at the apex of the system administering justice in this country. Therefore, while persons can make public statements about the Court and its members, even critical ones, they are obliged by law to do so respectfully and not to subject the Court and its members to scurrilous criticisms and scandalizing attacks. To do so, would bring the administration of justice into disrepute and constitute a contempt of Court,” Mr. Nandlall stated.

Mr. Nandlall has backed the statements issued by the Guyana Bar Council and Heads of Judiciary from various Caribbean States, who all condemned the leak of the internal correspondences of the Court, while steering clear of the contents of the correspondences.
