Two weeks after some government employees in the Aishalton area in Region 9 complained about not receiving their salaries, the 18-year-old District Development Officer in the community has been arrested for allegedly embezzling the money.
A Police statement said the Officer received $8.2 Million in cash along with the relevant pay sheets for the government workers in the area on the 25th May.
However, by the 2nd June, a number of the government workers filed complaints about not receiving their salaries.
An investigation was conducted and more than $867,000 was discovered missing and that amount represented the salaries for the complaining employees.
The Police said by the time the findings of the investigation were unearthed, the District Development Officer had already fled the area, but was arrested on Tuesday in another Rupununi area.
Charges could be filed against the Officer within days.
