“Unlawfully appointed” Parliamentary Secretaries absent from Sitting; Speaker says Court ruling will be followed

The two PPP Parliamentary secretaries who have been declared unlawfully appointed by the Chief Justice were not present in the National Assembly today as the Speaker indicated that he will be following the ruling of the Court.

The Chief Justice in her ruling made it clear that it would be illegal for the two to continue sitting in the Assembly as Members of Parliament.

The two unlawfully appointed Parliamentary Secretaries Vikash Ramkissoon and Sarah Browne were candidates on the PPP’s list at the last elections, which would make them elected members.

Although the ruling by the Chief Justice was handed down over a month ago, the Opposition was forced to write the Speaker on three occasions pressing him to obey the ruling of the Court as the two candidates continued to enjoy their positions and all that comes with the positions.

The Attorney General has since moved to the Appeal Court seeking a stay of the Chief Justice’s order while an appeal is taking place. The Court has not made any decision on that request.
