The Guyana Prison Service has announced that a Prison Officer attached to the New Amsterdam Prison is now in Police custody.
He is being investigated for his alleged involvement with smuggling over two pounds of marijuana and thirty nine packs of cigarettes in the prison.
According to the prison service, from video evidence obtained, the prison officer was seen in possession of the parcels that were thrown over the prison fence.
It is reported that he then conspired with prisoners to secure the parcels in the prison kitchen.
A middle manager, acted on information received and caused a search to be conducted. The items were then discovered.
The Acting Prison Director, Gladwin Samuels, said the prison officer has since admitted his involvement and has claimed that the items were to be delivered to a specific prisoner.
For this year already, the Guyana prison service has dismissed 28 ranks. Several others have been interdicted from duty pending investigation.
Most of the cases are related to the smuggling of contraband into the jailhouse.
