Ambassador restates US Government’s seriousness and commitment in seeking extradition of Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed

US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot has reinforced the US Government’s position on seeking the extradition of billionaire father and son businessmen, Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed.

In an interview with NewsRoom today, Ambassador Theriot said the US is 100% committed to seeing the process through and made it clear that the US Government does not spend taxpayers’ money seeking extraditions if it is not serious.

“But let me tell you, the US Government does not spend tens of thousands of US tax payers’ dollars to request extradition if we are not serious,” the US Ambassador said.

The father and son were indicted by a grand jury in the US Southern Florida District in October, 2025 to face charges of wire and mail fraud and money laundering and tax evasion related to gold exports from Guyana.

In Guyana, the extradition proceedings commenced in the Magistrates’ Court over four months ago and are still ongoing.

Ambassador Theriot said it is “incredibly important” for the proceedings to continue and for a decision to be ultimately made, even as she took note of the delays experienced to date.

“We want to see this happen. We want to see justice served both for the Guyanese and the US people. So, we are very hopeful that the proceedings will continue a pace and we will get a decision relatively soon,” she said.

Ambassador Theriot said while the US wants to see the case concluded, it respects the local judiciary, and will continue to look on from afar.

The Mohameds and their businesses were sanctioned by the US Government in 2024, with the indictment following in 2025.  The father and son have declared their innocence and are fighting the extradition request.

The son, Azruddin Mohamed, was recently elected as the Opposition Leader of Guyana after the party he formed ahead of the 2025 elections, won the most seats on the Opposition side of the National Assembly.
