Amidst calls by some in the society for snap elections, Guyana’s Minister of Labour Dr. Nanda Gopaul does not believe new elections will solve the problems of Guyana.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon during the budget debates, Dr. Gopaul told the National Assembly that another elections will not solve Guyana’s problems. He said while it could possibly change the make up of the house, it will not solve any real problem facing Guyanese and that is why he is hoping for more cooperation.
The combined Opposition parties, APNU and AFC currently hold the majority in the National Assembly. The Government fears that the Opposition will use that majority to once again slash several allocations in the budget.
During his presentation, Gopaul said the sugar industry must be supported and must be put in a position to survive, as he sought to defend the $6 Billion allocation to the Guyana Sugar Corporation. He warned the Opposition that they stand to lose support if they were to cut the budget . Gopaul who is a former Trade Unionist, said the sugar industry is very dear to him and he would like to see its turnaround and he believes the allocation would support a move in that direction.
The Opposition parties have already indicated that they intend to question the Government on the many allocations and their plans for the allocations. When it comes to Guysuco, the opposition believes there is a need for greater accountability and better management.
