Former General Secretary of the People National Congress, Aubrey Norton is confident that he will be the next leader of the 64-year-old party, replace the incumbent leader, David Granger when the Congress is held later this year.

The long-overdue biennial delegates Congress of the party is scheduled for no later than December 13.

During a virtual town hall meeting with party supporters last evening, Norton said the party is in need of reorganization and he believes he is best suited for the job at this time.

“I believe I will do the work to win, become the leader of the party and begin the process of reorganizing and developing the party and ensure that it can take on the PPP and allow our people to be free,” Mr. Norton said.

Norton said while he is confident of winning the leadership of the party, if he fails to capture the top spot, he will remain with the party and continue working in its best interest.

Mr. Norton said the party needs more young people in its leadership structure, adding that he sees himself as the person to transform the PNC and mentor young leaders in the party.

“When you are dealing with politics in Guyana, you have to deal with the PPP, you need political experience, you need courage, you need the ability to be on the ground, you need to link with the Guyanese people and the Guyanese people have a trust in you,” Mr. Norton pointed out.

According to the party executive member, young persons in the PNC who aspire to be leaders at this time would do themselves a disservice.

He said the country’s political climate at this time deserves someone who can stand up to the governing PPP.

Norton said once he becomes the leader of the party, he will start engaging and return the party to its base.

He also outlined his plans for the country’s foreign policy, health, and education sector as well as the petroleum industry, noting the need for constitutional and electoral reform to strengthen the democratic process.

The PNC recently established a congress committee that is putting systems in place for the hosting of the Congress and deal with nominations for various positions in the party.
