August becomes deadliest COVID-19 month for Guyana; Three more deaths recorded today

The Ministry of Health via its daily COVID-19 dashboard revealed this afternoon that the country recorded three more deaths from COVID-19 today.

No detail has been provided about the deaths and the Health Ministry continues to be tightlipped on the surge in new cases and deaths.

August has become the deadliest month for COVID-19 in Guyana as today’s three additional deaths have taken the total number of deaths for this month to 15.

Guyana recorded its first COVID-19 death in March with the very first case of the disease in the country. By the end of July, the total number of deaths had risen to 20.

But the death toll started to increase steadily in August just as the number of new cases started to rise.

In the past 28 days, Guyana has recorded 750 new cases and 15 new deaths. While the Health Ministry has explained that the increase in new cases is as a result of increased testing, it has been mum on the reason behind the increase in deaths.

40 new COVID-19 cases were recorded today, taking the total number of cases recorded in the past week alone to more than 250.

Of the 40 new cases, Region 9 has recorded 22 new cases while Region 4 has recorded 14 new cases. There are two new cases in Region 3 and two new cases in Region 7.

The country currently has 503 active cases with 407 of those persons in home isolation.
