Contracted workers at AGM Inc. down tools over several grievances

Scores of workers attached to one of the contracting companies at the AGM Inc. in Region Seven downed tools today in protest of several issues.

The workers are reportedly attached to the Gold Mountain company, which is one of the contracted companies at AGM.

Some of the workers, who reached out to News Source, complained about being unrepresented by a trade union, while others raised concerns about their working hours, late payment of salaries and no increases.

Some of the workers explained that in the past few months, many of their colleagues were dismissed without reason, while others were dismissed after raising concerns about their working conditions.

One worker told News Source that some of his colleagues have also complained about being victimized for seeking information about their job and raising concern about working conditions and salaries.

“Our salaries are always late, sometimes by more than 3 to 5 days”, he complained, while explaining that many of the workers now want the Ministry of Labour to step in, and probe the working conditions at the company.

Another employee, who said he has been attached to the company for several years, said more Chinese workers are being brought in to replace the local workforce.

He said salary increases have not been paid for a number of years, and whenever workers inquire about increases, they would be ignored completely or would find themselves looking for new jobs.

Officials at AGM Inc. pointed out to News Source that the workers, who were briefly on “stand down” are not directly attached to the company, but rather, they work with one of the contracted companies that provide employees at AGM. The official, however, noted that the concerns are serious and the matters will be looked into.
