Jagdeo promises Transportation voucher for school children under re-elected PPP Government

Promising to further increase the “Because We Care Cash Grant,” Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Saturday said the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will introduce a transportation cash grant for school children. He was at the time addressing a party rally in Anna Regina.

“The Because We Care grant will be increased. Every child will get a transportation grant every year. It will assist the parents for them to send them to school,” Jagdeo said.

The transportation cash grant for school children is among new measures included in the party’s Manifesto as it seeks re-election.

Turning his attention to social services and other critical sectors, the Vice President assured that better wages and salaries, increased pensions and social programmes, reduced electricity, better healthcare, education, security and public infrastructure, improvements in the cost of living and a reduction in cost of living will all be offered under a next PPP Government.

“We need better and more jobs for our people across the country, including in this region. And I promise you that you will get those jobs here in Region Two,” the Vice President said.

In an attack on the former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Government, Mr. Jagdeo blamed the former Government for the current state of the labour market.

He said too many jobs were lost between 2015 and 2020.

“We have to ensure that we tackle poverty. If you send home 7,000 sugar workers, like APNU did, and they can’t send their children to school. What do you expect to be, rich or poor? That’s what they left us with when we took back office in 2020. 7,000 sugar workers who were working, feeding their families, they lost their jobs. And they fell from middle income to the poor. Two thousand Amerindians, who had jobs, were terminated. What do you expect would happen to them, wouldn’t they go poor?” Jagdeo said.

And focusing on the We Invest in Nationhood Party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, Mr. Jagdeo said he is not too worried about that party.

“He is coming to these communities to save his own ass,” Jagdeo said, stressing that neither WIN nor APNU has the interest of the people of Guyana at heart.

He said PPP/C is looking forward to an overwhelming victory.
