Ballot boxes and election material safe following vehicle accident at LBI; Injuries reported

A number of GECOM staffers and party agents and at least one Police officer were injured last evening in a multi-vehicular accident while transporting ballot boxes from the Region Six Disciplined Services vote to GECOM headquarters.

The accident took place at La Bonne Intention on the East Coast of Demerara. In a statement this morning, GECOM said all of the election material was retrieved from the accident scene and was transported to GECOM headquarters, where they have been secured.

In a statement on the accident last evening, the Guyana Police Force said the mini-buses transporting the ballot boxes were proceeding west along the LBI Public Road when an unknown motorcar drove north-west out of LBI Access Road into the pathway of the escort, causing the Police vehicle to apply brakes.

It was explained that in so doing, the driver of one of the mini-buses applied brakes, resulting in the mini-buses following him crashing into each other in a train like effect. The Police were summoned and the injured persons were taken to the hospital, while the boxes were secured and transported to GECOM.

An investigation has been launched.
