An early morning fire has gutted a section of the Kwakwani Secondary School in Region 10, and an electrical supply problem to the building is being seen as the cause.
An alarm was raised at around 3:40am this morning after smoke was seen seeping through the windows of the office of the headteacher.
According to an eyewitness, Carlon Johnson, he contacted the security guard on duty to alert them to the fire in the headteacher’s office. He said upon closer examination, the heavy smoke was seen in the roof of the office while electrical wires were notice on fire.
The man said they raised an alarm while trying to douse the blaze. A resident of the area has stated that over the past several weeks, there have been power supply problems with high and low voltage being noticed.
The Guyana Police Force in a statement this morning, said a Police Officer was on duty at a nearby event when he noticed the fire and contacted his colleagues.
The Police used a fire pick-up in an attempt to douse the blaze, but the fire had already engulfed most of the building. Eventually, it was contained to the one building and extinguished.
An investigation has been launched.
