44-year-old Berbice woman, Tricia Elisabeth Loo, was today slapped with a $25.6 million fine and sentenced to three years in jail after she enter a guilty plea to the charge of trafficking more than 20 pounds of cocaine.
Loo appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after she was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan Airport with the cocaine in the false sides and bottom of her suitcases.
The Prosecutor explained to the court that the woman who claims she is a businesswoman, was called out by CANU agents after they noticed the false bottom and sides of her suitcases as it passed through the scanner system.
The woman admitted that the suitcases belonged to her and was immediately arrested after the cocaine was found fastened in the suitcases.
She was preparing to board a New York bound Caribbean Airlines flight.
The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has been stepping up its fight against the drug trade with support from the Police Narcotics Branch and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
