Well-known Biologist and Conservation Specialist, 30-year-old Meshach Pierre was found dead on Thursday in a camp at the G2 Minerals Compound at Oku Backdam in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region.
The Police said a suicide note was found in his phone and addressed to his family. Pierre, who had documented his mental health struggles in a number of social media posts and blogs over the years, was in the area to conduct a mammal survey. He was a qualified Mammologist, which is someone who specializes in the study of mammals.
In a statement today, the Guyana Police Force also revealed that a post-mortem examination was conducted on his body this morning and the cause of death was listed as “compression injuries to the neck”.
Pierre was last seen alive on Thursday morning when he spoke to his assistant, telling him that he needed to be alone in the shared accommodation camp since he would have been involved in a meeting.
It was the same assistant who discovered his lifeless body and immediately raised an alarm and summoning a Medex who is based at the camp. The body was taken to the Bartica Hospital before eventually being brought to the city for the post-mortem examination. The assistant was questioned by the Police.
Pierre was well known in the conservation community and was recently awarded for a project he completed that documented Guyana’s biodiversity in photographs and through his personal encounters.
On social media, many of his friends are remembering him as a pleasant person who had a passion for animals and the communities that they called home.
