The Guyana Police Force has reported that the young gold miner, Avinash Fernandes who was found dead in the Arakaka River after going missing from his mining camp, died from injuries consistent with manual strangulation.

The body of the 20-year-old was found last Wednesday in the Arakaka river in Region One.

He was last seen alive by one of his co-workers on the Monday night.

In its statement today, the Police Force said the post-mortem examination was conducted by Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh this morning after the body was identified by the man’s sister.

The pathologist listed the cause of death as “Axphyxiation due to compression to the neck, consistent with manual strangulation”.

An initial examination of the body after it was found showed no visible marks of violence, according to the Police. But a decision was taken to still have the post-mortem examination conducted.

The body has since been handed over to the family for funeral arrangements.
