Brassington present, Ashni Singh absent as new misconduct in public office charge is filed

Former Minister of Finance under the last PPP Civic Government, Dr. Ashni Singh and former Privatisation Unit Head, Winston Brassington are facing a new charge of misconduct in public office.

Singh was a no-show in Court this morning as the charge was read. Brassington and his Attorneys were present.

Attorney-at-law, Anil Nandlall, who is representing Dr. Singh in the matter, told the Court that his client is still out of the country, but he plans to return to face the Court.

With that assurance, the matter was adjourned to another date, with the Magistrate explaining that the charge is a joint one and therefore all two accused will have to be in Court for the matter to be officially read to them.

The charge is related to the sale of the Sanata Textiles Complex to the Queens Atlantic Group in 2010 at a cost that was less than 50% of the estimated value.

The several acres of land with the properties were sold to the Queens Atlantic company  for $600 Million, although they were all valued at over $1 Billion.

Singh and Brassington are currently on bail over earlier charges that related to the sale of several other government properties at below market value. That case is ongoiung.

The new matter will come up again on July 25.  It has been sent to the Courtroom of the Chief Magistrate.
