BREAKING: COVID-19 claims 3rd life in Guyana; 78-year-old victim dies at GPHC

Hours after the Public Health Minister updated the nation on the situation with the coronavirus in Guyana, a third patient who was hospitalised lost her battle against the virus.

The woman has been identified as 78-year-old New Amsterdam resident Osa Collins.

She was the only known coronavirus case from that part of the country.

Ms. Collins was considered an ‘imported case’ as she had recently travelled to the United States of America.

In her update report this midday, the Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence revealed that the total number of positive cases in Guyana jumped from 12 to 19 between Monday and Tuesday.

She also revealed that a total of 70 persons had been tested so far for the virus.

Lawrence renewed a call on citizens to practice social distancing and also encouraged them to follow the guidelines being pushed by her Ministry and the World Health Organisation to fight the virus.

On Tuesday, the Director of Medical Services at the Georgetown Hospital encouraged staff members to take all necessary precautions against the disease as the hospital is expecting a surge.
