BREAKING NEWS: President chooses retired Justice, James Patterson as new GECOM Chairman

President David Granger this evening met with Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo and announced to him that he has decided on a new Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission and it will not be any of the nominees put forward by the Opposition Leader.

The President has decided that retired Justice, James Patterson, will be the new GECOM Chairman and he will be sworn in to office this evening at 8:30pm.

State Minister, Joe Harmon, confirmed the President’s decision.

The President’s decision and announcement reportedly caught the Opposition Leader by surprise and he appeared upset as he was leaving the meeting, according to sources at State House.

The President reportedly explained that he had rejected the third list put forward by Mr. Jagdeo and has decided to go ahead and choose a GECOM Chairman on his own, since there could be no agreement and the Chief Justice provided for such a move in her recent ruling.
