BUDGET: $209.3 Billion allocated for construction of roads and bridges

A total of $209.3 Billion has been allocated in this year’s Budget for the construction of roads and bridges, the Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh announced on Friday.

Dr. Ashni Singh told the National Assembly that the Government will be forging ahead with an ambitious infrastructure plan.

“Since returning to office in August 2020, we have constructed the new Heroes Highway, the Mocha to Diamond interlink road, the Schoonard four-lane road, an alternate by-pass road through Diamond and Grove interlink, we completed the Sheriff to Mandela Road, we have started the East Coast Road and we have finished the Conversation Tree project, just to mention a few,” the Finance Minister stated.

He said that a sum of $74B was spent on community roads last year and a further 53.2$B will be spent on community roads this year with another $9B going for the rehabilitation of hinterland roads.

In total he said, some 4,000 community roads have so far been rehabilitated.

In addition, the Minister said once talks are advanced with the Surinamese Government, works will begin on the construction of a new Bridge across the Corentyne River bridging the two countries. Some $5B has been allocated for those works.

A total of $15.5B was also budgeted for the four-lane highway from Palmyra to Moleson Creek, in Corentyne and a further $5B was budgeted to begin works on the new Berbice River Bridge.

Another $20.2B was allocated for the new Demerara Harbour Bridge and $2.5B to advance works on the Wismar Bridge in Linden.

The railway embankment project will also get another boost of $17.5B this year.
