A Cuban national, who was not licensed to drive in Guyana, was charged and remanded to prison today for causing the death of two Indonesian nationals by dangerous driving.

35-year-old Ramon Rodrigues of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara who worked at Avinash Construction Inc. as a driver, appeared in Court this morning where he faced the two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Rodrigues was the driver of a heavy duty truck along the Timehri Public Road when he reportedly lost control of the truck and slammed into a mini-bus that was transporting a group of foreign oil workers who had just arrived in Guyana.

A number of the workers were pitched from the bus as a result of the impact. Two of them, Edy Sukri and Ikomang Putra, were pronounced dead at the scene, while four other persons were rushed to the hospital and admitted with multiple injuries. The driver of the truck was immediately arrested and taken into custody.

A Police report of the incident stated that the truck, which was heading in the airport’s direction, made a sudden swerve into the lane with vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, slamming into the two private buses that were transporting the workers from the airport.

In Court today, the Cuban national was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. He was remanded to prison and the presiding Magistrate has set the date of September 25, 2026 for the continuation of the case.
