Cabinet meeting until CCJ offers clarity -Harmon

The Cabinet has been meeting since the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice and the Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joe Harmon, today said the Cabinet is awaiting clarity from the Caribbean Court of Justice.

Two weeks ago, the CCJ ruled that the no-confidence motion against the Government of Guyana was valid. Mr. Harmon said he has seen nothing in the ruling that prevents the cabinet from meeting.

The CCJ is still to hand down specific consequential orders as a result of its ruling.

Those orders are expected to be made on the 12th July and are expected to address the issue of whether the Cabinet should remain in place.

Today, Mr. Harmon said that is the clarity that the Government is waiting on. In submissions to the CCJ, the Attorney General is asking the Court to allow the cabinet to remain in place in its consequential orders. The Attorney General has pointed to the need for the cabinet to be in place to address issues of national security and territorial security.

However, the Attorneys for the Opposition Leader are contending that the President and Cabinet should resign in keeping with the constitutional requirements on the passage of a no-confidence motion.

While the Constitution states that the President and Cabinet should resign once a no confidence motion is passed, it also states that not withstanding its defeat, the Government shall remain in office and hold elections.
