Local Calypsonian and drug trafficking deportee, Mark Ferdinand could find himself singing a different tune as he is facing serious charges following a drug bust at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
44-year-old Mark Anthony Ferdinand was arrested at his Pouderoyen home on Thursday after investigators were led there, following the arrest of 52-year-old Cranson Carlton Henry at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
Henry was held with more than 13 pounds of cocaine in milk powder packets.
According to a report from CANU, Cranson Henry who lives at Crane, West Coast Demerara and also has a Brooklyn, New York address, was an outgoing passenger destined for the United States when a search of his luggage unearthed the large quantity of cocaine.
CANU said the cocaine was found contained in seven Milex-branded milk powder packets. The man admitted to having knowledge of the prohibited substance during a video-recorded interview.
The drug enforcement agency said the cocaine carries a street value of more than $13 million.
Based on the interview with the outgoing passenger, CANU investigators visited the home of calypsonian Mark Ferdinand and arrested him in connection witht the same drug shipment.
CANU reminded that Ferdinand, who was a finalist in this year’s Calypso competition with a song titled “Happiness”, was arrested in the US in 2015 for drug trafficking. He was later deported after being convicted and completing his jail sentence.
Ferdinand’s brother, Berkeley Ferdinand was convicted locally in 2016 of drug trafficking and completed a three year prison sentence.
