Cameron and Shepherd Law Firm celebrates 125th Anniversary

Cameron and Shepherd Law Firm celebrates 125th Anniversary

Established by William Stuart Cameron and his cousin, Charles Edward Shepherd, on April 4, 1901, the Cameron and Shepherd Law Firm has not only stood the test of time, but has demonstrated an ability to adapt to the changing legal landscape while serving with excellence.

On Saturday, the distinguished Guyanese law firm celebrated 125 years of existence, and during an evening of reflection and commendation at the Pegasus Suites, Managing Partner of the firm, Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran, said Cameron and Shepherd is an indigenous Guyanese firm which survived 60 years in colonial British Guiana and more than 60 years in independent Guyana.

“It is not for me to say whether Cameron and Shepherd reputation in 1926 is anything close to what it is in 2026. At that time, there were at most a few dozen lawyers in practice – today there are hundreds – many of great skill and learning, some of whom are present here. But I can say we strive everyday to live up to our responsibilities to our clients, to the judiciary and to the rule of law and to maintain the standards of the past,” Ramkarran said.

Mr. Ramkarran said while many great names have fallen, Cameron and Shepherd survived with its original name, character and structure intact. He said that survival is owed to the firm’s commitment to its clients, its dedication to excellence, and trust among the partners based on rigid adherence to fundamental standards and principles.

The law firm, he noted, operates today in an era of unprecedented reforms and developments both the level of the justice system and the country’s economic landscape.

“For the law firms that present themselves as partnerships we have the single largest number of cases in the court, we are the single largest customer of the Supreme Court Registry, the Deeds Registry, and the Land Registry. We contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to these agencies on behalf of our clients. We therefore take seriously, the need for collaboration, respectful and responsible relationships which we thrive to foster,” the Managing Partner said.

Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Roxane George was among those who offered words of commendations. Acting Chancellor George, while applauding the law firm for chronicling its history, said it is known for producing lawyers who are erudite and respectful.

“I have had the benefit of the lawyers from Cameron and Shepherd appearing before me and one can count on them to not only represent their clients and represent them well but to engage the court in an erudite and respectful manner at all times,” the Chancellor (ag) said,

Attorney General Anil Nandlall was among other dignitaries present at the event.

Cameron and Shepherd was acknowledged for its contribution to the law and the administration of justice in Guyana, including through the British Guiana Law Reports, the Guyana Law Reports and the West Indian Reports.

Many of those reports captured the contributions of Attorneys from Cameron and Shepherd to jurisprudence in Guyana and the region.
